olivier gondry talk

olivier gondry, brother of michel gondry, gave a talk today at ucla. very interesting. he said something that really stuck with me. he said as a child, you can watch a movie about a story over and over and over again. but as an adult, you can't do it, you watch it once and you are done. the second time, it's not the same. but moods can be repeated indefinitely. everyone wants to feel the same thing over and over again. the piece becomes interesting because of this. this is so true.

i just dreamed this up

in this weird dream where i was a high school kid and while sleeping on a bench got attacked by two kids with an blacklight ink marker who likes to write backwards so the victim could read it in the mirror. and then it was some story about a business deal the family was going through and was subservient to this guy who was being an ass and then i found out he has a brother with two twin kids and said they like to write things backwards. suddenly the two things clicked and saved the day by threatening to charge the twin kids with assault if he didn't cooperate. (i shit you not this is what i dreamed) anyways. something interesting came out of this dream (don't ask me where this came from) but an idea for a product, an disposable instant tea pot. imagine an enlarged tea bag. you know how tea bags is lined with aluminum inside to keep taste? well imagine a big one about the size of a sandwich bag. more wide. you can rip the top to pour water in. the bottom of the bag is like a grocery store bag and will expand wide when filled with water. the left side of the bag has some sort of spout like thing which inside the bag is designed in a built in filter. all the tea is inside the bag. boom, instant tea pot!

Mai Ueda is a Genius

ok, it took me a while to realize this but it just hit me

romanticus.com

genius

Motomichi+

So I just sent my friend Motomichi, who I met in berlin a proposal for a pieceThe idea is that there would be a wall of light, and when people walk infront of the light, their shadows are created. inside the shadow, characters that motomichi would design appears and move, so using your body, you shape the characters, so your shadow becomes the character.

Daft Punk Infinite mix

you know, i was just listening to Alive, the album, I wonder if they ever tried to release an album designed to listen on repeat forever. that would be the most wonderful working music

My life has just simplified

I just installed VMware and can run windows with 3d acceleration directly from osX, LIFE IS GOOD!

UCLA is the second real link (well, 4th, but you don't really count wikipedia)

San Jose Airport Expansion proposal

This is a proposal for the new terminal parking lot facade for the San Jose airport's new terminal.

Christian Moeller was given the facade on the street side of the lot and he's already planning on doing this chain link fence bit map image thing that he did in seattle.

So he wanted to do something on the other side as well.

the idea was to create a fluorescent light facade that would look interesting and can animate

so something like a dan flavin, with casey reas
and a dash of realities united

Sounds like a good combination right!
haha

well, some early studies by Jan Elder from Realities United showed that readable image can be very easily produced by a system of florescent lights. However, the system seems to only work in a matrix format where each light represents a pixel essentially. The architecture unfortunately would make such a matrix look uninteresting (I mean, bix is so cool cause of the curved surface). So I endeavored to first create an interesting random distribution first.

Christian wanted a distribution with a dense area and a non-dense area. To do this using a algorithm would make it uninteresting. So I created a program which dispersed 3000 florescent lights in segments of 1 bulb, 2 bulbs, 3 bulbs and 4. When each segment is created, it chooses a random location on the 300 m. by 20 m. facade. The probability that the segment is set at that location is based upon an image map created in photoshop, thus allowing me to control the density of the facade in a more organic way.

here is some studies ( click for enlarged view)
With this distribution, it leans itself easily to a random blinking animation as you see below

However, the facade still needed to display representational imagery (because, let's face it, it grabs you more). So then I programmed the lights of each segment to light up based on region instead of what segment it is on. Thus accomplishing the matrix pixel image animation without compromising the distribution.

this is the end result: people walking
